Buy s'mores supplies and assemble them around campfires in the garden!

You'll start your visit at the Baker Exhibit Center, with the special exhibit "Wicked Plants". Pick up a map so you won't miss anything. Stroll through the various paths in the gardens for many vistas of the lights. Guided by green principles, the design team created a show composed of energy-efficient LED lights, which use 80% less energy than conventional lights. Proceeds generated from the Winter Lights fundraiser will help the Arboretum continue to expand its educational programs, exhibits and facilities.

Christmas Village & Tree Lighting - Clayton, NC

Join us Thursday, Nov. 30, 2017 for this Clayton holiday tradition!

Thousands of people will pack Main Street Thursday, November 30, 2017 to help bring Downtown Clayton alive with the holiday spirit for the 27th Annual Tree Lighting & Christmas Village!

Starting at 5:30 p.m., enjoy two and a half hours of music, holiday cheer, a business open house, a live Nativity, train rides and — of course — a chance to see Santa, now at Horne Square. Make parking easy with shuttles from Clayton High School or the Post Office. The ticket price? Just one non-perishable food item for needy families!

Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony – Town Square
Program begins 7:45 p.m. – We aim to light the tree at 8 p.m.!

Follow Santa Claus and the honorary “Mr. Christmas” James Lipscomb as they ride in a horse-drawn carriage down Main Street to Town Square. The Doggie Costume Contest participants and the Clayton High School Marching band will also help lead everyone to the square at the corner of Main & O'Neil streets. At 7:45 p.m. Mayor Jody McLeod will welcome the crowd and we'll announce the costume winners and the storefront decoration winners! Miss Clayton High School will peforem and then we'll start the countdown to the tree lighting! Don't miss this holiday tradition.

Mr. Christmas – James Lipscomb

The Clayton Downtown Development Association's 2017 honorary "Mr. Christmas"  is James Lipscomb. Lipscomb is a hometown boy who would grow up to be a Town leader and one of the community's biggest advocates. Lipscomb's mom ran the popular day care and he worked in his dad's community store on Main Street - forever engraining himself in Downtown Clayton, its history and the families and small town businesses that are its backbone. Lipscomb served on Town Council, owns a Downtown Clayton real estate company, serves as President of the Clayton Downtown Development Association and has been instrumental in an exciting rebirth of downtown restaurants, retail and renovations. The town is growing, but as he told our former local paper, he fully believes that newcomers and natives can work together to keep Clayton the same down-home place it's always been for him. Thank you "Mr Christmas!"

Santa & Ms. Claus – 5:30–7:30 p.m.

This year Santa and Mrs. Clause are slipping duties and spreading out!  Santa Clause is once again at Horne Square! Join us at the Square at 348 E. Main Street, on the corner of Lombard and Main streets, where children can sit on Santa's lap and share their Christmas wishes! Two trackless trains will circle the parking lot at Horne Square to deliver the children to the photo area! Families get to snap free pictures with their cameras or cell phones. Mrs. Claus will also be taking photos with her elves at the Main Street Community Garden, but if you want Santa - head to Horne! She's be joined by other fun characters in the garden too!

Downtown Business Open House – 5:30–7:30 p.m.

Hundreds get to experience all that Downtown Clayton has to offer from retail to service businesses. Come get to know our small businesses - there are so many new shops to explore! They'll welcome you in with holiday refreshments including cider, soft drinks, cookies, candies and other gifts. If your stomach is calling for more than just snacks, all downtown restaurants are open for dinner.

Live Nativity – 5:30–7:30 p.m.

We have to remember the reason for the season!  A live nativity can be found on the open lawn of Sherry’s Signature Cheesecakes, across the street from the historic Wagner House. And yes, they have live animals that don’t mind being pet!

Doggie Christmas Costume Contest & Parade – 6–7:30 p.m. Clayton Chiropractic

This continues to be a popular contest! Contestants should be at Clayton Chiropractic by 6 p.m. for registration! The entry fee of $5 will benefit the RUFF Rescue UR Forever Friend. A small change from last year: crowd judging will begin at 7 p.m. and Most Creative, Most Festive and Best Overall will be judged by the applause of the fans! The parade will begin at 7:30, when the dogs will join Mr. Christmas, Santa, and the marching band and walk to Town Square. Winners of the three categories will be announced at Town Square, and a certificate to claim your prize at  Doggie Do’z pet salon at 113 E First Street, will be awarded at that time!

Dance & Choral Performances – 5:30–7:00 p.m.

Children from Clayton’s elementary and middle schools and daycares will provide holiday performances on risers at the corner of Main Street & Smith Street, in the middle of Main Street.
Dance studios will be performing at the corner of Fayetteville and Main Street.

Carolers will begin at Town Square at 6 p.m. and be at the steps of the Clayton Chamber of Commerce by 6:30 p.m. These talented carolers are courtesy of the Clayton High School Chorus.

Horne UMC Handbells & Choir will perform at 229 East Main Street, Blackley’s Printing from 6:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

The Clayton Middle School Jazz Band will perform on the stage at Town Square, beginning at 6:20 p.m. and the Clayton High School Marching Band will begin marching down Main Street at 7:30 p.m. signaling for everyone to head to Town Square!

FREE Shuttles & Clayton Area Ministries (CAM) Holiday Food Drive 5:30- END

4042 Motors is kindly providing TWO shuttles to Town Square. Park at Clayton High School on Fayetteville Street OR at the Post Office on the corner of Front & Central and ride all night.  Ticket price: Just one non-perishable food item to be donated to needy families!  Your donations for the shuttle rides will go to the Clayton Area Ministries Holiday Food Drive. Please donate any food items you can for those families less fortunate this holiday season. For more information call 919-553-5654 or visit www.claytonareaministries.org.

Dillsboro Festival of Lights & Luminaries - NC

December 1-2 and 8-9, 2017
The Dillsboro Festival of Lights & Luminaries illuminates this mountain village the first two weekends in December. In an era of electronic gadgetry and LED lights, Dillsboro’s celebration is a throwback. Adapted from a Scandinavian custom of lighting the way for the Christ child, more than 2,500 candles in white bags line the streets with more than a dozen shops to explore.

In addition to the luminaries, the town’s merchant “elves” trim their buildings – many of which date to the late 1800s – in traditional white lights. Shopkeepers also stay open late and serve coffee, warm cider, hot chocolate and homemade goodies to visitors. There will be sing-alongs throughout town, horse-and-carriage rides, WCU students strolling the streets in renaissance costumes, children’s art in the courtyard, plus Santa and Mrs. Claus setting up shop in Town Hall.

The Festival of Lights & Luminaries begins each evening at dusk and runs until 9 p.m. There is no admission charge. Come early to explore downtown Sylva also, just three miles away.

See our Dillsboro Guide. Dillsboro is located on the Tuckasegee River near Sylva at the crossroads of U.S. Hwy. 23/74 and U.S. Hwy 441 in Jackson County. The town is less than an hour west of Asheville.

Lake Julian Festival of Lights - NC

December 1-23, 2017
A local's favorite drive-through Christmas light show takes over a popular county park at Lake Julian in south Asheville (near Biltmore Park). Their annual Festival of Lights includes 50 animated and stationary light displays.

Walk December 1, 2017, 6-9 PM: The season always kicks off with the “walk through night” - the only time you can walk through. Our favorite night! Admission this night is $5/adult and children are free. The half mile drive has a few inclines, but it's very family friendly and the paved drive is great for strollers and wagons. Warm up by the fire and make a s'mores. Make crafts. Santa will also be on hand for pictures. Sorry, no pets allowed. Park at Family of Faith Fellowship Church, 212 Long Shoals Road, Arden.

Drive December 2-23, 2017, 6-9 PM: Admission is $10 per passenger vehicle and $20 for large vans, motor coaches, and buses. Advance tickets may be purchased online for $7 per passenger vehicle and $14 for large vans, motor coaches, and buses. 20% of proceeds are donated to Buncombe County Special Olympics.

See more Holiday Outings and Events in and near Asheville. A bigger Christmas light show is Winter Lights at the NC Arboretum.

Address for GPS is: 406 Overlook Road Ext., Arden, NC 28704

More about Lake Julian
Lake Julian Park is a family recreational facility located on the banks of 300 acre Lake Julian in Arden. The park offers picnicking, boating, fishing, a playground, outdoor games and special events. Lake Julian has an abundance of bass, catfish, brim, crappie and imported Tilapia. Because Lake Julian is used as a cooling agent for Progress Energy the lake is “thermal.” Some of the best fishing occurs from October through March. Paddle boats and canoes are available for rental. These boats can be rented by the ½ hour or by the hour. Six picnic shelters are available for rent at Lake Julian Park. In addition to the shelters, many tables and grills are available at no charge on a first-come first-served basis.

Messiah - Carolina Ballet - Raleigh, NC

In 1741, George Frideric Handel completed work on his legendary composition, Messiah. Originally presented as an Easter celebration, Handel’s magnificent oratorio has become more closely associated with the Christmas holiday, due in large part to the soaring majesty of its choruses. Artistic Director Robert Weiss’ choreography for this incredible production is accompanied by live music, featuring the North Carolina Master Chorale under the baton of Al Sturgis. The ballet visualizes the sublime oratorio in a unique blending of song and dance.

Holiday Parade - Downtown Asheville, NC

November 18, 2017
The festive Asheville Holiday Parade in downtown is a fun way to kick off the Christmas season - complete with local personality for plenty of smiles. It starts at 11 AM, so several downtown streets will be closed that morning. Come early to find you a spot along the one-mile route. All of these photos are from 2016! Above, the Asheville Second Line (don't miss their Mardi Gras Parade on February 11, 2018). For more fun in November and December, see our Top Holiday Season Things to Do.

The parade travels up Biltmore Avenue from Charlotte Street towards Pack Square. Pack Square is the only performance area, the location for WLOS TV cameras and judges. The parade then turns left on Patton Avenue and ends on French Broad Street.

This year's theme is Holiday Magic. Celebrating 70+ years, the parade features 100 entries including marching bands, dance and cheer squads and festive floats.

The 90-minute parade features of entertainment for all ages.

Since it's Asheville, you'll never know what you'll see along the way! Even the Christmas parade needs some weirdness.

LaZoom Tours is always a crowd favorite with their purple bus and variety of characters, led here by Sister Bad Habit.

After the parade, families are invited to Pack Square for photos with Santa from 2-4 PM and start your holiday shopping in downtown Asheville. The Parade will line up along South Charlotte Street which will be closed to traffic beginning at 7 AM.

That evening at 6 PM, watch the lighting of the Winter Lights trees at Pack Square, presented by the North Carolina Arboretum’s Winter Lights
