The Chowan County Regional Fair was first held in 1947 as The American Legion Fair (See History link for a detailed history).  Since that time it has grown into one of the most respected fairs in the State, winning many awards, culminating with the prestigious Image Award for best medium sized fair in North Carolina in 2007.

The Fair is sponsored by The Edward G. Bond American Legion Post 40 and is run by The Chowan County Regional Fair Association. The Association is made up of an Executive Committee, a Board of Directors, Ex-Officio Board Members, and a Junior Fair Board. Directors serve a three year term and can be re-elected when their term expires. Ex-Officio Members include student advisors, extension service agents, a senior citizen representative, and legal counsel.

The job of actually running the Fair is divided into committees, most of which are chaired by Board Members and made up ofthe hundreds of volunteers that help each year. There is only one paid position on the fair staff and that is our Housekeeper. Everyone else, including the Fair Manager is a volunteer. Chowan County Regional Fair is one of the few all-volunteer fairs left in North Carolina.

The Chowan County Regional Fair is licensed by the North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services as an Agricultural Fair. The Fair is a member of The North Carolina Association of Agricultural Fairs and The International Association of Fairs and Exhibitions. Board Members regularly attend conventions and zone meetings to learn and share knowledge from other fairs and industry experts that will improve the Fair. Board members have also been very active in the North Carolina Association of Agricultural Fairs. Four of our officers have served on the Board of Directors of The NCAOAF and three have served as President. Several have served and two are still serving on various Committees of the NCAOAF.

The Chowan County Regional Fair Association is dedicated to providing the people of the Albemarle Region the best possible fair experience and entertainment value.

Moonshiners Reunion - Plum Hollow, SC

Dedicated to keeping the moonshining spirit alive, the Moonshiner’s Reunion and Mountain Music Festival is one of the Appalachian region’s most authentic annual folk music celebrations. This event is the inspiration of musician Barney Barnwell, whose career path is as winding and steeped in local color as the Moonshiner’s trail leading to the copper pot corn whisky still. Plum Hollow Farm (also known as Woodstick), which lies near South Carolina’s “Dark Corners”, one of America’s moonshining hot spots, provides a unique and beautiful setting for the festival. A covered bandstand and gentle hillside sets the stage for laying on a quilt and getting comfortable when the music begins. Bring your lawn chair, your tent, your RV. Just remember no glass of any kind is allowed!

Over 100 civic, church and other non-profit organizations participate in the festival. For many of them, the festival has become the biggest fundraiser of the year. Over 160,000 people visit this festival during the day and it's FREE.  The streets of downtown North Wilkesboro, NC are filled with over 425 arts and crafts, 100 food concessions, 4 different music stages consisting of Blue Grass, Country, Folk, Gospel, and Appalachian Heritage. Cloggers, folk dancers, rope skippers, and square dancers provide additional entertainment venues for festival goers. Appalachian Heritage crafts are highlighted such as woodcarving, chair making, soap making, pottery throwing, and quilting. When walking through the streets of the festival observing and buying lots of the arts and crafts, Appalachian dulcimers can be heard while the smells of the variety of foods are enticing everyone's appetites. Let us not forget the apples, apples, and apples. Local apple growers set up throughout the festival selling their apples, apple cider, and dried apples. After all, this festival also pays tribute to the fruit grown and harvested each fall by apple orchardists from Northwestern North Carolina.

Spooky Meadows - Morganton, NC

Catawba Meadows Park will be sporting a spooky disguise throughout Halloween week this year. City of Morganton Parks and Recreation and the Valley Hills Antique Power Club have joined together to bring Spooky Meadows back to Morganton for the second time and provide visitors will “the thrills and chills of a good old-fashioned Halloween Hayride.”

Morganton Parks and Recreation Administrative Manager Jennifer Nicholson said the inaugural event last year drew more than 500 people. Due to the surprising large numbers in attendance, they decided to expand to three nights this year.

Nicholson said there will be five trailers that continuously will be taking people throughout the trail, which runs through the park and along the Morganton Greenway. The ride will last about 20 minutes, and they are aiming to have groups leave every five minutes to get them through quickly. The trail is going to offer many different Halloween-oriented, spooky props, and volunteers and staff members from the power club and recreation center will be working the trail.

The ride is not only longer this year but also will have two additional trailers and more haunted features throughout the trail, Nicholson said.

“Its family oriented,” she said of the ride. “Parents can participate as well as the children.”
