http://www.lifeinthecarolinas.com/where-to-watch/online/viewvideo/125/the-tom-dooley-story

Life In the Carolinas host Carl White shares the story of Carolina legend Tom Dula (Dooley) who was reported to be, Laura Foster's lover and probable fiancé, who was convicted of her murder and hanged May 1, 1868. This story comes alive with the help of Karen Reynolds, Playwright and Author and many others.

Dula had a lover, prior to his leaving for the war, named Anne Melton. It was her comments that led to the discovery of Foster's body, but Melton was acquitted in a separate trial based on Dula's word. Dula's statement on the gallows that he had not harmed Foster but still deserved his punishment led to press speculation that Melton was the actual killer and that Dula simply covered for her.

Melton, who had once expressed jealousy of Dula's purported plans to marry Foster, died insane a few years after the homicide. Thanks to the efforts of newspapers such as The New York Times, and to the fact that former North Carolina governor Zebulon Vance represented Dula pro bono, Dula's murder trial and hanging were given widespread national publicity.

http://www.lifeinthecarolinas.com/where-to-watch/online/viewvideo/27/greenwood-county-sc

Life In The Carolins host Carl White visits Greenwood SC and discovers many of the things that makes Greenwood such a special place to visit and live. Greenwood's climate is mild and seasonable, with an average temperature of 68 degrees. While the summer can bring heat and humidity, the spring and fall exhibit mild temperatures and many days filled with sunshine and beauty. Winters in Greenwood are comfortable, with very little precipitation or snow. For visitors, year round outdoor activities are common and popular at local Greenwood attractions. The city of Greenwood, the county seat, is located near the center of the county. Ware Shoals, in the northeast corner of the county, is 17 miles north of Greenwood and Ninety Six is 9 miles east of Greenwood. The area is accessible to three major interstates and only hours away from both the mountains and the coast. Greenwood County takes its name from its county seat, Greenwood. The town of Greenwood was named around 1824 for the plantation of an early resident, John McGehee. Greenwood County was formed in 1897 from parts of Abbeville and Edgefield counties, which were originally part of the old Ninety Six District. This part of the backcountry was not settled until the mid-eighteenth century. The town of Ninety Six was established as a frontier trading post around 1730, and it was the site in November 1775 of one of the first South Carolina battles of the American Revolution. In May 1781 American forces besieged the British-held Star Fort at Ninety Six for over a month but were forced to withdraw when British reinforcements approached. The arrival of the railroad in 1852 stimulated cotton growing and textile manufacturing in this area. Local plantation owner Francis Salvador (1747-1776), who was killed fighting Cherokees during the Revolutionary War, was the first Jewish person elected to the state legislature. United States Congressman Preston Smith Brooks (1819-1857) and educator Benjamin Mays (1894-1984) were also residents of Greenwood County.

Haywood County was created from Buncombe County in 1808. It was named in honor of John Haywood, Treasurer of North Carolina. The first court was ordered to be held at Mount Prospect, at which time the justices could decide on some other place for holding court until a courthouse could be erected. In 1809, the justices of the peace were authorized to appoint commissioners to erect the courthouse - "In the erection of the public buildings at Mount Prospect there was laid the foundation of the little city of Waynesville. In the record of the court of pleas and quarter sessions, the name Waynesville occurs first in 1811." Waynesville was confirmed as a town by legislative act in 1810, and it has been the county seat ever since.
